Customer guide
What is a waste carrier licence?
Anyone taking waste away for you should be properly registered. A quick licence check helps you avoid rogue collectors and gives you proof that you took reasonable care. What the licence means
A waste carrier registration shows that a business is registered to carry, broker or deal in waste. For most paid rubbish removal, house clearance and builders waste jobs, you should expect an active Upper Tier registration.
- Ask for the waste carrier registration number.
- Check the business name matches who you are dealing with.
- Make sure the registration is active before collection.
Upper Tier matters for most paid collections
Lower Tier registrations are more limited. They can apply to certain organisations carrying their own waste, charities or public bodies. For a company collecting your household or trade waste for payment, Upper Tier is usually the safer expectation.
What to ask before booking
A genuine carrier should be comfortable explaining where your waste will go, how it will be handled and what proof you receive afterwards.
- Where will the waste be taken?
- Will I receive a receipt or waste transfer note?
- Are there extra charges for heavy or specialist items?
